We did it! Not only did we survive the first week of school- we THRIVED! I had the best time getting the year off on a super positive note!
Positivity Project begins our day each morning. This week we focused on the program's hashtag- #otherpeoplematter. We learned 5 basic principals that help build strong relationships: remember your actions impact others, be present, look for the good, cheer on successes, and support those who are struggling.
In Social Studies, we learned a community is any place that you live, work, or play. We know that we belong to lots of communities and learned about how being a good citizen can look different in different places. For example, the playground has different expectations than the library. Different cultures also have different expectations for citizens.
In reading this week we set up the beginnings of our interactive reading notebooks where we will keep all KINDS of resources we can refer back to as needed throughout the year. It will also give you a great place to check in and see what we've been up to! We began with expectations for our reading stations. Then we moved into our first big second grade reading job- asking and answering questions! We started with fiction and will practice the same skill with rich nonfiction text next week. We learned there are thick and think questions and that how you answer a question depends upon what type of question it is. We read books like Chrysanthemum and Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon to practice.
In writing we began our first big writing piece- a small moment personal narrative. We will work on this one for a while, really digging in to the writing process. At the same time, we will also have a writing warm up each day where we complete a smaller fun writing task or game to get the ideas flowing!
In math we talked about growth mindset and collaboration. We had a paper airplane contest to practice collaboration and used a number line to measure distance flown. We wrote down everything we know about number lines and actually HOPPED down a number line in our classroom to help us visualize how we will use the number line to solve equations!
